The Inside Gateway – Avoiding the Hun – Number 89 in a Series

Sometime during World War II, a northbound O&W train arrives at Wilber’s having just surmounted the short – but steep – Smyrna Grade in the distance. Wilber’s was situated between Sherburne Four Corners and Smyrna, and doubleheading on the Northern Division was extremely rare during periods other than those of the great world conflict. This article is one of many I just re-posted from the “Member’s Only” area of the O&Website. I hope that those of you that are new take the time to looks through these, they are a treasure trove of information on the often less talked about Northern Division. What John has done here is monumental. He brought the Northern Division front and center through his insightful and well researched articles, many of them focusing on the human aspect surrounding the O&W. It was an absolute pleasure working with John on this series many years ago now. Unfortunately I could not post them all on the site as many of them were created before the days of .pdfs which have now become a standard on sites such as this.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
